Haad Rin

The southern tip of the island, home to the Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach). If you're here for the party, this is the place. The beach transforms into something extraordinary once a month — fire dancers, multiple sound stages, 30,000 people.

Outside of Full Moon and the surrounding days, Haad Rin is actually quite relaxed. Small restaurants, dive and snorkel operators, a cluster of bars that function at normal volume, and a genuinely beautiful beach on the sunrise side.

On Full Moon week, accommodation prices double to triple. Book months ahead if you're going for the party.

Best hotels in Haad Rin:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
Haad Rin Resort 1,500–3,000 THB On the beach, well-positioned
The Sanctuary 1,200–3,500 THB Mixed — wellness meets party circuit
Palita Lodge 800–1,500 THB Budget, short walk to beach
Lighthouse Bungalows 600–1,200 THB Budget, on quiet rocky headland

Srithanu — The Wellness Capital

If Haad Rin is the party end of Koh Phangan, Srithanu on the west coast is the opposite. Yoga studios, vegan cafes, cacao ceremonies, sound healing workshops, and a genuinely alternative community have built up here over the past decade.

It's not precious or performance-yoga — the community is diverse and relaxed. Some of the best plant-based food in Thailand is available within walking distance of each other in Srithanu.

Best hotels and retreats in Srithanu:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
Anahata Wellness Resort 3,000–6,000 THB Yoga retreats, healthy restaurant, pool
Hacienda Na Xamena (Phangan) 2,000–4,000 THB Boutique, wellness-adjacent
Santhiya Koh Phangan 6,000–12,000 THB Luxury north coast (not Srithanu but nearby)
Jungle Huts 600–1,200 THB Simple, jungle setting, community feel

Anahata is a good wellness base — they run yoga retreats, have an excellent vegetarian restaurant, and the setting among palm trees is genuinely calming. Not all-inclusive wellness resort pricing; reasonable rates for a productive week.

Thong Nai Pan

The north-east corner of the island has two of Koh Phangan's most beautiful bays — Thong Nai Pan Noi (smaller, calmer, more upscale) and Thong Nai Pan Yai (bigger, more budget accommodation). Getting here requires either a boat or a challenging road through the mountains (doable but rough in places).

The difficulty of access is the point — it keeps the crowds down and the atmosphere genuinely remote. If you want beautiful Thailand beach without the Full Moon circus, this is one of the best options on the island.

Best hotels at Thong Nai Pan:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villa Resort 8,000–18,000 THB Luxury, stunning bay, couples
Panviman Resort 3,000–6,000 THB Hillside, views, pools
Baan Panburi Village 1,500–2,500 THB Mid-range, family-run, good service
Bottle Beach Bungalows 500–1,000 THB Budget, the next bay (Bottle Beach)

Anantara Rasananda is exceptional — a luxury property in one of Thailand's most beautiful bays. Private villas, outstanding spa, and a genuinely peaceful setting despite being part of a major hotel group. One of the best luxury stays on the Gulf islands.

Chaloklum

The north coast fishing village is the most local-feeling part of Koh Phangan. There are a few guesthouses, some excellent local seafood restaurants, and access to snorkelling and diving at nearby Ko Ma (connected to Koh Phangan by sandbar at low tide) and Sail Rock (one of the best dive sites in the Gulf).

Very few tourists base themselves in Chaloklum, which makes it genuinely worth considering for travellers who want the island without the tourist infrastructure.

West Coast (Haad Yao, Haad Salad, Haad Mae Had)

The west coast has a series of small bays with calm water, minimal development, and reasonable prices. Haad Yao is the largest — a crescent beach with a good cluster of accommodation and a dive school.

Best hotels on the west coast:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
High Life Resort Koh Phangan 1,200–2,000 THB Haad Yao, hillside, views
Blue Parrot 800–1,500 THB Haad Yao, mid-budget
Haad Salad Resort 1,500–2,500 THB Haad Salad bay, quiet, family-friendly

Full Moon Party: Practical Notes

  • Held on or near the full moon each month, always at Haad Rin Nok
  • Official timing is midnight to dawn, but parties start earlier
  • Boats run from Koh Samui throughout the night (so you can base yourself on Samui if preferred)
  • Essential: wear old shoes (broken glass), bring cash, stay with your group
  • Accommodation prices go up dramatically for the full moon week — budget travellers book months ahead
  • The "Half Moon Party" and "Jungle Experience" are smaller events on other dates throughout the month

Koh Phangan Hotel Price Guide (2025)

When to Visit Koh Phangan

Same Gulf of Thailand pattern as Koh Samui — the island is on the east coast of the peninsula.

Best: February to April (dry, clear) Good: December to January Wettest: October to November

If you're going for the Full Moon Party, any month works — it runs all year. The November full moon is particularly atmospheric (end of rainy season, slightly cooler).

Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui

Many visitors to the Gulf islands debate between these two. The short version:

Factor Koh Phangan Koh Samui
Vibe Diverse — party/wellness/beach More resort, more developed
Beaches Beautiful, varied Good, busier around Chaweng
Development Less Much more
Value Better Higher prices
Accessibility Ferry from Samui (30 min) Direct flights
Accommodation range Budget to mid-luxury Budget to ultra-luxury

Many people do both — fly into Samui, ferry to Phangan for a few days, return to Samui for the flight out.

Getting Better Rates

Koh Phangan has excellent accommodation at every price point. The boutique and independent properties in Srithanu and the north of the island often have better rates than what the major OTAs show. EezyStay covers Koh Phangan with current availability and prices worth comparing.

FAQs

Is Koh Phangan safe? Yes, generally. The Full Moon Party gets rowdy — drink spiking incidents are reported, and petty theft around the beach party. Keep valuables secured and look after your drinks.

Do I need to stay on Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party? No — the last ferry back to Samui is around 3am and many people do the night and return. But staying on Phangan means you can recover properly and explore the island.

Is Koh Phangan good for families? Yes, if you base yourself away from Haad Rin. Haad Yao, Chaloklum, and the west coast are genuinely family-friendly.

Can you walk or cycle around Koh Phangan? Within beach areas, yes. Between areas, the roads are often steep and winding — a scooter is the most practical transport. Grab coverage is improving but still limited outside the main town.
