Chaweng Beach

Chaweng is Koh Samui's main strip — the widest, most famous, and most developed beach. The main road behind the beach (Chaweng Beach Road) is lined with restaurants, bars, beach clubs, shopping, 7-Elevens, and everything else you'd expect from a major Thai resort town.

The beach itself is long and generally clean, with a water sports scene (jet skis, parasailing, banana boats). Nightlife is concentrated around Green Mango Street and the beach road.

This is the obvious base for first-timers who want convenience. It's not the most beautiful or peaceful part of Samui, but you won't run out of things to do.

Best hotels in Chaweng:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
Samui Buri Beach Resort 3,000–5,500 THB Beachfront, pool, mid-range
Amari Koh Samui 3,500–6,000 THB Full resort, beach, family
New Star Beach Resort 1,000–1,800 THB Budget, direct beach access
Baan Samui Resort 2,000–3,500 THB Decent mid-range, beachfront

For genuine luxury in Chaweng, you're better placed at Chaweng Noi (the southern headland) where the land rises and villas have sea views. Properties here include the O by CK boutique resort, which has some of the best-positioned infinity pools on the island.

Lamai Beach

Lamai is Samui's second-biggest beach — 4 km south of Chaweng and noticeably quieter. It has a small bar strip but nothing approaching Chaweng's noise levels. The beach is narrower, the sand coarser in places, but the atmosphere is more relaxed.

It's a popular choice for couples and repeat visitors who want easy beach access without the Chaweng circus.

Best hotels in Lamai:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
The Briza Beach Resort 2,500–4,500 THB Beachfront, pool, good service
Pavilion Samui Villas & Resort 3,500–6,000 THB Boutique, well-positioned
Lamai Wanta Beach Resort 1,500–2,500 THB Mid-range, decent beach access
Weekender Resort 800–1,500 THB Budget, pool, fine for the price

Bophut — Fisherman's Village

Bophut is on Samui's north coast and feels like a different island from Chaweng. The old Fisherman's Village is a row of restored Chinese shophouses converted into restaurants, boutique shops, and a few excellent bars — genuinely charming, especially on Friday nights when the walking street market runs.

The beach is calm and good for swimming (protected from the Gulf's southern swells), and the accommodation here trends towards boutique and independent properties rather than the big resort chains.

Best hotels in Bophut:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort 7,000–14,000 THB Luxury, beachfront, excellent restaurant
Hansar Samui Resort 5,000–9,000 THB Boutique luxury, infinity pool
The Lodge Koh Samui 2,000–3,500 THB Charming boutique, good location
Cactus Bar & Bungalows 700–1,200 THB Budget, walking distance to village

Anantara Bophut is one of Samui's best properties — a resort with strong beach positioning, an excellent restaurant on the pier, and the beautiful north coast view. The Friday night market is walkable from here.

Hansar Samui is the design-conscious alternative — minimalist interiors, a stunning infinity pool, and slightly smaller scale (more boutique feel than Anantara).

Choeng Mon (North-East Corner)

Choeng Mon is a small, sheltered bay at the north-east tip of the island, near the airport. The beach is calm and suitable for families — the bay filters out the rougher water that affects the east coast in wet season.

It's one of Samui's more exclusive areas — a handful of upscale resorts and villas, not much budget accommodation, and a quiet local fishing village feel despite being just 10 minutes from Chaweng.

Best hotels in Choeng Mon:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
SALA Samui Choengmon Beach Resort 8,000–15,000 THB Boutique luxury, couples
The Tongsai Bay 6,000–12,000 THB Private bay, exclusive, legacy property
Impact Beach Resort Samui 2,000–3,500 THB Good value for the location

The Tongsai Bay is a Samui institution — a private bay with a no-children-at-the-pool policy, an exceptional spa, and the sort of genuine privacy that's hard to find elsewhere on the island.

Maenam (North Coast)

Maenam is the longest beach on the north coast and the most local-feeling. There's a solid long-stay expat community here, some excellent local restaurants along the main road, and accommodation that runs heavily budget and mid-range.

The beach is wide but can be shallow at low tide. Not the best swimming but a pleasant environment.

It's the right base for digital nomads doing a month in Samui and anyone who wants to live at local prices.

Best hotels in Maenam:

Hotel Price/Night (approx) Best For
Santiburi Koh Samui 5,000–9,000 THB Quiet luxury, golf, families
The Sunset Beach Resort 1,500–2,500 THB Mid-range, good for the money
Maenam Resort 800–1,500 THB Budget, decent beach access

Koh Samui Price Guide (2025)

When to Visit Koh Samui

Samui has an unusual weather pattern. It sits on the Gulf of Thailand's east coast — the opposite side of the peninsula from Phuket — which means its rainy season is different.

Best: February to April (dry, clear, calm) Good: December to January (holiday season, slight rain risk late December) Wettest: October to November (can be very rainy, some flooding)

This makes Samui a good alternative to Phuket/Krabi if you're travelling in June to September — when the Andaman coast is wet, the Gulf side is often drier.

Getting Better Rates

Samui's large resorts lean heavily on Booking.com and Agoda. Smaller boutique properties often have availability and rates that those platforms don't show accurately. EezyStay compares across sources and tends to surface better deals on the independent and boutique end.

FAQs

Is Chaweng beach still nice despite all the development? It is, yes. The sand is good quality and the beach is wide. The town behind it is busier and more commercial than anywhere else on the island, but the beach itself is fine.

How do I get between beaches on Samui? Grab works on Samui (better than most Thai islands). Songthaews run the ring road but can be slow. Renting a scooter is the best option if you're comfortable on one — but the road quality varies and accidents are common.

Is the airport really in the middle of the island? No — it's on the north coast near Choeng Mon. Transfers to Chaweng take about 15 minutes; Lamai about 25–30 minutes.

Is Koh Samui good for families? Very much so — Choeng Mon, Bophut, and Maenam all have calm water suitable for kids. The big resorts at Chaweng and Bophut have kids' clubs.
