Pattaya vs Koh Samui 2026 — Which Resort Destination Is Right for You?
Two of Thailand's most visited resort destinations, and they couldn't be more different. Choosing between them is easy once you know what each actually offers.
The Quick Version
Pattaya is a city on the Gulf of Thailand coast, 2 hours from Bangkok. It has the most developed nightlife scene in Southeast Asia, decent beaches (though not the best), and a busy, urban energy. It's not a pristine island escape.
Koh Samui is Thailand's second-largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand (Surat Thani Province). It has excellent beaches, good infrastructure, a full-moon party neighbour (Koh Phangan), and a mix of backpacker and upscale resort culture. It's a proper tropical island.
Location
Pattaya: On the mainland, 145km southeast of Bangkok along the eastern seaboard. Easy access — 2-hour bus from Ekkamai, or a short drive. No flights needed.
Koh Samui: Island in the Gulf of Thailand, 700km south of Bangkok. Fly (1 hour, Bangkok Airways from Suvarnabhumi) or take the overnight train/bus and ferry (12–16 hours, much cheaper).
Beaches
Pattaya: Pattaya Bay (the main beach) is not beautiful. It's a working beach in a busy city — jet skis, vendors, noise. Jomtien Beach (5km south) is cleaner and more relaxed. Naklua Beach in the north is quieter. Koh Larn, an island 45 minutes by ferry, has genuinely good beaches and is the main reason beach-lovers come to the Pattaya area. The island day trip is worthwhile.
Koh Samui: Chaweng Beach is long, white, and lined with resorts — very popular and showing its age in some sections. Lamai Beach is similar but slightly quieter. Bophut (Fisherman's Village area) is lovely. Bang Po and Maenam on the north coast are quieter and good for families. Mae Nam Beach in particular has shallow, calm water ideal for swimming.
Winner: Koh Samui. Not close. The beaches on Koh Samui are consistently better than anything in Pattaya proper. Koh Larn is the only thing that salvages Pattaya's beach credentials.
Nightlife
Pattaya: This is Pattaya's specialty. Walking Street is the epicentre — clubs, bars, shows, the full works running until dawn. It's intense. Jomtien has a quieter bar scene. There are beach clubs, rooftop bars, and international restaurants throughout the city. Pattaya's nightlife infrastructure is more developed than anywhere else in Thailand.
Koh Samui: Chaweng has a solid nightlife strip — Green Mango Club, Ark Bar, Coco Tam's on the beach. It's lively without being Pattaya-level intense. The full moon area (Koh Phangan, 30 minutes away) is the major party destination for the island cluster.
Winner: Pattaya for sheer volume and intensity of nightlife. Koh Samui for a nightlife scene that's fun without being overwhelming.
Prices
Pattaya: Reasonably priced by Thai standards for accommodation, but prices vary enormously depending on where you stay. Budget options in the city centre start from 600 THB. Mid-range 1,500–3,000 THB. Food is cheap — street food on Second Road is excellent and inexpensive.
Koh Samui: More expensive than Pattaya. Budget bungalows exist but the island has skewed upscale. Mid-range resort rooms from 2,000–4,000 THB in peak season. Beach club lunches and restaurant meals are pricier than equivalent quality on the mainland.
Winner: Pattaya for budget travellers. But the quality of Koh Samui justifies the premium for beach-focused holidays.
Getting There
Pattaya: Very easy. Bus from Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) in Bangkok runs all day (120 THB, 2 hours). Minivans from On Nut and Sukhumvit area. Some travellers arrive by ferry from Hua Hin (3.5 hours, 800 THB — scenic route).
Koh Samui: Fly (around 1,200–3,000 THB one way from Bangkok) or take the bus+ferry overnight combo (around 600–800 THB). The bus/ferry is a long journey but budget-friendly and actually enjoyable if you're not rushed.
Winner: Pattaya for ease and cost of access.
Family Travel
Pattaya: Has improved its family credentials with Cartoon Network Amazone water park, the Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, and Ripley's Believe It or Not. The adult entertainment scene is very visible in some areas, which some parents find uncomfortable. Choose your area carefully.
Koh Samui: Better for families overall. Quieter beaches (especially north coast), good resort infrastructure, less confrontational nightlife in family accommodation zones. The Samui Elephant Sanctuary is excellent.
Winner: Koh Samui for families.
Who Each Place Is For
Pattaya is best for: - Solo male travellers with a nightlife focus - Groups of friends who want maximum party options - Day-trippers from Bangkok wanting a beach day at Koh Larn - Short-stay visitors (2–3 nights) from Bangkok
Koh Samui is best for: - Couples wanting a proper beach holiday - Families - Travellers who want good beaches + some nightlife + island-hopping options - Anyone spending 5+ nights in one beach destination
The Verdict
For a genuine tropical island holiday with good beaches: Koh Samui wins.
For nightlife-focused or budget short-stays close to Bangkok: Pattaya is more practical.
They serve different purposes and attract different people. The comparison only really applies to travellers who are on the fence — and for those people, Koh Samui is almost always the better call if beaches and quality of environment matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pattaya or Koh Samui better for a beach holiday?
Koh Samui is significantly better for beaches. Chaweng and Lamai beaches offer clear water and white sand in a genuine island setting. Pattaya's main beach has poor water quality; the better beaches are on Ko Larn island. For a straightforward beach holiday, Koh Samui wins decisively. Pattaya is better chosen for nightlife, activities, or proximity to Bangkok.
Is Pattaya cheaper than Koh Samui?
Yes. Pattaya is considerably cheaper — accommodation, food, and activities all run lower than Koh Samui equivalents. A mid-range beachfront hotel in Pattaya costs 1,500–3,000 THB versus 3,000–6,000 THB for equivalent Koh Samui quality. Budget accommodation in Pattaya starts from around 500 THB per night, lower than almost anywhere on Koh Samui.
How long does it take to get to Koh Samui from Bangkok?
The easiest route is to fly — Bangkok to Koh Samui takes about 1 hour on Bangkok Airways from Suvarnabhumi. Alternatively, fly to Surat Thani then take a bus-ferry combination (adds 2–3 hours). The overnight bus-ferry route from Bangkok takes 8–12 hours and costs 600–900 THB — popular with budget travellers.
Is Koh Samui good for nightlife?
Koh Samui has a solid nightlife scene centred on Chaweng Beach's main strip — bars, clubs, live music, and beach parties. It's energetic but not as intense as Pattaya or Koh Phangan's Full Moon scene. Koh Samui suits travellers who want good nightlife as part of a beach holiday rather than as the primary objective.
Which is better for families — Pattaya or Koh Samui?
Koh Samui is better for families — the beaches are genuinely family-friendly, there are good resort facilities, and the island atmosphere is more manageable with children. Pattaya has family attractions (Cartoon Network Amazone, Nong Nooch Garden) but the adult entertainment district is omnipresent and can make the town feel less comfortable for family travel.
