Koh Lanta's Beaches: North to South
Koh Lanta Yai's beaches run down the west coast — the road follows the shore for about 30 km. Each beach has its own feel, price point, and type of traveller.
| Beach | Distance from Pier | Vibe | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long Beach (Pra Ae) | 5 km | Budget/mid mix, lively | Budget travellers, central base |
| Klong Dao | 3 km | Family-friendly, calm | Families, mid-range |
| Kantiang Bay | 23 km | Remote, beautiful, quiet | Couples, luxury, escape |
| Klong Nin | 15 km | Local-ish, relaxed | Long stays, yoga crowd |
| Nui Beach | 18 km | Very quiet, small | Snorkelling, seclusion |
| Bamboo Beach | South tip | Mostly day trippers | National Park visitors |
Klong Dao Beach
The most family-friendly beach on the island — gentle surf, shallow water, and a good cluster of restaurants and accommodation within walking distance. It's relatively busy in season but still far quieter than comparable beaches in Phuket or Samui.
Best hotels at Klong Dao:
| Hotel | Price/Night (approx) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Lanta Sand Resort & Spa | 3,500–6,000 THB | Beachfront, pool, families |
| Crown Lanta Resort | 2,500–4,500 THB | Well-run, beach access, good value |
| Lanta Casuarina Beach Resort | 1,500–2,500 THB | Mid-range, decent beach position |
| Lanta Pura Beach Resort | 1,200–2,000 THB | Budget-mid, pool, reasonable |
Lanta Sand Resort is the most complete option at Klong Dao — beachfront position, a proper spa, multiple pools, and good food. It's the right call for families who want convenience without the resort-complex feel.
Long Beach (Pra Ae)
Long Beach is the longest beach on Koh Lanta and the main budget and mid-range hub. There's a decent strip of restaurants, dive shops, travel agents, and the island's most active after-dark scene (relatively speaking — Koh Lanta is not a party island).
The beach itself is excellent — wide, mostly clean, with beautiful sunsets. The water can be shallow at low tide toward the centre.
Best accommodation at Long Beach:
| Hotel | Price/Night (approx) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Lanta Pavilion Resort | 2,000–3,500 THB | Mid-range, beachfront |
| The Narima | 1,500–2,500 THB | Boutique-ish, value |
| Relax Bay Tropical Resort | 1,200–2,000 THB | Bungalows, relaxed atmosphere |
| Costa Lanta | 800–1,500 THB | Budget bungalows, hippie vibe, good character |
Costa Lanta deserves a mention for character — wooden bungalows under palm trees with a communal chill-out area. Simple, honest, good value. The kind of place people stay for a week and end up booking for three.
Klong Nin Beach
About halfway down the west coast, Klong Nin has a quiet stretch of beach, a few excellent local restaurants, and a small yoga/wellness scene. It's less developed than the northern beaches and attracts longer-stay visitors and returning travellers who've already done the busier spots.
Best hotels at Klong Nin:
| Hotel | Price/Night (approx) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Lanta Hideaway Resort | 1,500–2,500 THB | Boutique bungalows, peaceful |
| The Lazy Days Bungalows | 800–1,500 THB | Budget, decent beach access |
| Klong Nin Beach Resort | 1,200–2,000 THB | Mid-range, relaxed |
Kantiang Bay
The standout beach on Koh Lanta and one of the most beautiful bays in southern Thailand — a deep horseshoe bay framed by jungle hills with almost no development beyond the beach. Getting here requires either staying at one of the few properties in the bay or a 30-minute songthaew ride from the centre of the island.
Best hotels at Kantiang Bay:
| Hotel | Price/Night (approx) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Pimalai Resort & Spa | 7,000–15,000 THB | Luxury, beachfront, outstanding |
| Lanta Paradise Beach Resort | 1,500–2,500 THB | Budget option in the bay |
Pimalai Resort & Spa is the reason Koh Lanta gets mentioned in the same conversation as Phuket luxury resorts. It's an extraordinary property — 100 acres of hillside and beach, a spectacular pool, diving and snorkelling from the beach, and a level of service that punches above its price point. For a special stay in southern Thailand, Pimalai competes with anything on the Andaman coast.
Koh Lanta Old Town
The old town on the east coast is one of the most atmospheric villages in southern Thailand — wooden stilt houses over the water, Chinese-Malay shophouses, a Muslim fishing community that's been here for generations. It's not a tourist attraction; it's a living place that happens to be beautiful.
There are a few guesthouses here for travellers who want the most authentic end of the island spectrum. It's less convenient for beaches — a motorbike or scooter makes sense.
Diving from Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is one of the better dive bases in Thailand — close proximity to the Hin Daeng/Hin Muang dive sites (some of Thailand's best wall diving), plus Ko Ha, Ko Rok Nai, and Ko Rok Nok. Leopard sharks, manta rays, and whale sharks are all sighted here seasonally.
Most dive operations are based on Long Beach or Klong Dao. If diving is your main priority, staying within walking distance of the dive shops makes morning departures easier.
Koh Lanta vs Koh Phi Phi
This is a common dilemma for Andaman coast visitors:
| Factor | Koh Lanta | Koh Phi Phi |
|---|---|---|
| Vibe | Laid-back, slow | Party, busy, photogenic |
| Beaches | Long, uncrowded | Spectacular but crowded |
| Nightlife | Minimal | Active |
| Diving | Excellent (better sites) | Good (more limited) |
| Accessibility | Ferry, slightly more effort | More connections |
| Budget options | Better | Limited (high demand) |
| Crowds | Far fewer | Dense in peak season |
Koh Phi Phi is extraordinary-looking but can feel like a theme park in peak season. Koh Lanta is the better choice for anyone who values atmosphere and space over Instagram scenery.
Koh Lanta Hotel Prices (2025)

| Boutique/Upper | 3,000–6,000 THB | Character properties, better service |
| Luxury | 7,000–15,000 THB | Pimalai tier, full resort, excellent |
When to Visit Koh Lanta
November to April: Dry season, calm sea, best diving conditions. Peak season. May to October: Wet season — most hotels close from June to October. Check before booking.
Koh Lanta is more seasonal than the Gulf islands. If you're going between May and October, verify the property is open.
Getting Better Rates
Koh Lanta accommodation skews toward independent properties and smaller resorts — many of which don't get the best representation on the major OTAs. EezyStay includes Koh Lanta properties with current availability and rates worth comparing.

FAQs
Is Koh Lanta good for families? Yes — especially Klong Dao and the northern beaches. Calm water, long beaches, family-friendly resorts. Not the most activity-dense option, but a good choice for a relaxed family beach holiday.
Can you get around Koh Lanta without a scooter? Within each beach area, yes. Between beaches or to old town, you'll want either a scooter, a booked songthaew, or Grab (coverage is patchy but growing).
Is Koh Lanta very touristy? In high season (December to March), it's noticeably busy on Long Beach and Klong Dao. The southern beaches and old town remain genuinely quiet.
Is the diving worth it compared to Koh Tao? Different styles. Koh Tao is better for learning and coral reefs; Koh Lanta is better for big animal encounters (mantas, whale sharks at Hin Daeng) and wall diving. Both are worth doing.
