Koh Lanta vs Koh Phangan 2026 — Which Thai Island Is Better for You?

Two very different islands. Both worth visiting. Both in Thailand. But choosing the wrong one for your travel style is a mistake that costs you a week of your trip.

Here's the honest comparison.

The Short Answer

Choose Koh Lanta if: You want a relaxed beach holiday, beautiful sunsets, good snorkelling, peace and quiet, and you'd rather be in bed by midnight.

Choose Koh Phangan if: You want the Full Moon Party experience, lively nightlife, a more social backpacker scene, or you're coming for yoga and wellness retreats.

Still not sure? Read on.

Location

Koh Lanta is on the Andaman coast, part of Krabi Province. It's west-facing, which means spectacular sunsets over the Andaman Sea. It's near other excellent Andaman destinations: Koh Phi Phi is about 1.5 hours by speedboat, Krabi town is 2 hours by minivan and ferry.

Koh Phangan is in the Gulf of Thailand, part of Surat Thani Province. It's one island in a cluster — Koh Samui is 30 minutes south, Koh Tao is 1.5 hours north. It's east-facing, so sunrises are better than sunsets.

Beaches

Koh Lanta: Long, wide, relatively uncrowded beaches backed by palms. Long Beach (Hat Khlong Dao), Klong Nin Beach, and Kantiang Bay are all excellent. The sand is clean, the water is warm, and you can find a quiet spot even in peak season.

Koh Phangan: More varied. Haad Rin (Full Moon Party beach) is overbuilt and not particularly beautiful. But Koh Phangan has some genuinely stunning beaches away from the party zone: Thong Nai Pan Noi and Yai, Haad Khuat (Bottle Beach), and Mae Haad. These compare to anything in Thailand.

Winner: Koh Lanta for consistency. Koh Phangan has higher highs (Thong Nai Pan) but also more disappointing spots.

Nightlife

Koh Lanta: Low-key. Beach bars with fire jugglers, acoustic music, good cocktails. The vibe is relaxed. Most places close by midnight or 1am. This is not a criticism — it's the point.

Koh Phangan: The Full Moon Party (monthly) is the world's biggest regular beach rave. 20,000+ people. Fire shows. Multiple sound systems on Haad Rin beach. It's an experience. Away from Full Moon, the island has a solid year-round party scene at Haad Rin, Eden Garden, and the Half Moon parties.

Winner: Koh Phangan by a wide margin if nightlife is what you want. Koh Lanta if you want to avoid it.

Snorkelling and Diving

Koh Lanta: Good snorkelling on day trips from the island — particularly around Koh Rok and Koh Ha, both part of the Mu Ko Lanta National Park. These are excellent sites with colourful reefs and marine life. Dive shops are plentiful.

Koh Phangan: The diving here is less impressive than Koh Tao (which is only 1.5 hours north), but it's decent. Snorkelling around Mae Haad and the northern tip of the island is good.

Winner: Koh Lanta for snorkelling. If diving is your priority, Koh Tao beats both.

Prices

Both islands are mid-range for Thailand. Budget bungalows exist on both.

Koh Lanta: Budget bungalows from 600–1,000 THB. Mid-range resorts 1,500–3,500 THB. Meals from 80–200 THB.

Koh Phangan: Budget from 500–900 THB (prices surge dramatically during Full Moon — up to 3x normal). Mid-range 1,500–3,500 THB. Meals from 80–250 THB.

Winner: Roughly equal outside Full Moon. Avoid Koh Phangan during the party if you're budget-conscious — prices spike hard.

Getting There

Koh Lanta: Ferry from Krabi (2–2.5 hours, around 400 THB) or Koh Phi Phi (1.5 hours, 500 THB). Only open during the high season November to May (limited ferry service in low season).

Koh Phangan: Ferry from Koh Samui (30 minutes) or from Surat Thani (2.5 hours). Year-round access, well-connected.

Winner: Koh Phangan for ease of access year-round.

Who Each Island Is Best For

Koh Lanta is best for: - Couples wanting a romantic beach holiday - Families with kids - Snorkellers and divers - Long-stay travellers wanting quiet mornings and lazy afternoons - Anyone who's done the party scene and wants to skip it this time

Koh Phangan is best for: - 20-something backpackers and party-goers - Full Moon Party seekers - Yoga and wellness retreat visitors (Sri Thanu and Srithanu area is Thailand's yoga hub) - Solo travellers who want a social, easy-to-meet-people vibe - People island-hopping with Koh Samui and Koh Tao

The Verdict

They're not really comparable — they attract different travellers. But if we had to pick one for a "best beach holiday" experience that most people would enjoy: Koh Lanta wins. Better beaches, better snorkelling day trips, better value, and none of the Full Moon hangover.

If you specifically want the party experience or the yoga community, Koh Phangan is the right call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Koh Lanta or Koh Phangan better for a beach holiday?

Koh Lanta is better for a relaxed beach holiday — long stretches of relatively uncrowded sand, good snorkelling, and a genuinely quiet atmosphere with no large party events. Koh Phangan is better if you want the Full Moon Party or a social island scene. Outside party periods, Koh Phangan's northern beaches are genuinely lovely and quieter than its reputation suggests.

Which island is better for couples — Koh Lanta or Koh Phangan?

Koh Lanta is the better couple's destination — peaceful, beautiful, with good boutique resort options and stunning sunsets. Koh Phangan suits couples who want more energy and don't mind the occasional Full Moon Party week. For romantic beach holidays, Koh Lanta is consistently the recommendation.

Is Koh Lanta or Koh Phangan cheaper?

Koh Phangan is slightly cheaper for budget accommodation, particularly around Hat Rin (Full Moon Party area) where backpacker bungalows are very cheap outside event weeks. Koh Lanta's mid-range and boutique options are excellent value, and prices drop significantly in low season. EezyStay lists both islands with rates below the major OTAs.

When should I avoid Koh Phangan?

Avoid Koh Phangan in the 3–4 days around Full Moon Party (every month, typically the full moon date) if you don't want the party scene — accommodation prices triple and the island is overwhelmed with young backpackers. The rest of the month, Koh Phangan is a completely different, more relaxed island.

There's no direct ferry between Koh Lanta and Koh Phangan. The typical route is ferry from Koh Lanta to Krabi pier, then bus to Surat Thani, then ferry to Koh Phangan — approximately 5–7 hours total.
