Thailand Cool Season 2026 — Best Destinations for November to February
November to February is Thailand at its absolute best. The monsoon has ended, the air is clear, the humidity drops, and temperatures across the country are at their most comfortable. This is peak season for good reason — but knowing where to go and what to expect makes all the difference.
The Weather Picture
Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai, Nan): This is the region where cool season is most dramatic. Temperatures drop to 15–18°C at night in December and January. Days are warm and clear (28–32°C). The air quality is good (the burning season that creates haze starts in March). Perfect conditions for temple-hopping, mountain motorbike routes, and trekking.
Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak): November to April is the dry season. Calm seas, clear water, excellent visibility for diving and snorkelling. The Similan Islands open in October and close in May — the window aligns perfectly with cool season travel. This is when the west coast beaches are at their best.
Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao): The Gulf islands have their own quirk. November and December bring the Gulf monsoon — short but heavy rain and occasionally rough seas. January to March is excellent. Koh Tao and Koh Phangan are generally less affected than Koh Samui. Cool season travellers who want Gulf islands should target February and March.
Bangkok: November to February is Bangkok's best weather. Low 20s at night, low 30s during the day. No humidity to speak of. Pollution can be an issue in December and January (temperature inversion traps city pollution), but the weather for sightseeing is genuinely excellent.
Best Cool Season Destinations
Chiang Mai — The Definitive Cool Season Destination
If you're in Thailand during the cool season and you skip Chiang Mai, you've missed the point. The city at this time of year is extraordinary:
- Sunday and Saturday Walking Streets in full swing
- Temples in the old city with morning mist
- Day trips to Doi Inthanon National Park (Thailand's highest peak — genuinely cold at the summit in December)
- Elephant sanctuaries running full programmes
- Rice harvest complete, countryside looking spectacular
The cool season also aligns with two of northern Thailand's best festivals: Loi Krathong (lanterns on the river, usually November) and Chiang Mai Flower Festival (February, enormous parade of floral floats).
Koh Lanta — Best February to April
Koh Lanta is quiet from May to October (monsoon) and hits its stride from November onwards. By January and February, it's absolutely perfect — calm seas, clear water, excellent snorkelling on day trips to Koh Rok and Koh Ha, and the tourist numbers still slightly below peak.
Book EezyStay in January or February and you'll find rates 15–20% below the December peak prices with slightly better availability and fewer crowds.
Khao Lak and Similan Islands — December to April
The Similan Islands are only open from mid-October to mid-May. The sweet spot is December through March — the seas are calmest, visibility is at its best (often 25–30m), and liveaboard diving conditions are excellent.
For a Similan Islands liveaboard, book 3–4 months ahead for December and January departures. February and March are slightly easier to get onto.
Sukhothai — November Loi Krathong
If you can time it right, Sukhothai's Loi Krathong festival in November is one of the most beautiful events in Thailand. Thousands of candles and floating offerings in the temple ponds, combined with the illuminated ruins, creates an atmosphere that's genuinely moving.
Book accommodation in Sukhothai 4–6 months ahead for Loi Krathong — it's one of the year's most sought-after experiences and the accommodation supply is limited.
Nan and Northern Mountain Province — December to February
The northern mountain provinces (Nan, Mae Hong Son, Doi Inthanon area) are at their best in the cool season. The cherry blossoms at Doi Inthanon bloom in late January and February. Nan's mountain roads are clear. The hilltribe villages are most accessible. Accommodation is cheaper than Chiang Mai and the experience is more authentic.
Bangkok — Temple and Culture Season
November to February is the best time to do Bangkok properly. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Chatuchak Weekend Market — all comfortable to visit without the brutal summer heat. The city's rooftop bars are actually enjoyable (not sweat-soaked) in the cool evening air.
Booking Considerations for Cool Season
Book ahead, particularly for December and January. Popular Chiang Mai hotels and beachside Phuket and Khao Lak resorts fill up quickly for the Christmas/New Year period and again in January.
February and March are underrated. The weather is still excellent, crowds thin out after the Christmas-New Year peak, and prices drop. Often the best overall value in peak season quality without peak season prices.
Loi Krathong accommodation: November's Loi Krathong festival (celebrated most famously in Chiang Mai and Sukhothai) means accommodation books out in those cities specifically. Check the date each year and book accordingly.
Cool Season Packing
Northern Thailand: - A light jacket or fleece for Chiang Mai evenings - Warmer layers for Doi Inthanon and mountain areas (temperatures near freezing at the highest elevations in January) - Sunscreen (the UV is strong despite the comfortable temperatures)
Beaches: - Standard beach kit — the weather is perfect and the seas are calm
Bangkok: - Light clothing — the daytime is warm. A cardigan for the aggressive air-conditioning inside malls and restaurants.
Book Cool Season Hotels on EezyStay
The cool season is when EezyStay's value proposition is clearest. Peak season means premium rates everywhere — and the OTAs use the high demand to inflate rates above what the hotels are actually charging.
EezyStay's lower commission structure means you see closer to the real rate even during the busiest period of the year. On a 2-week cool season trip across multiple destinations, the saving versus Agoda or Booking.com can be 5,000–15,000 THB.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best Thailand destinations for the cool season (November to February)?
The cool season is excellent across almost all of Thailand. The north (Chiang Mai, Pai, Chiang Rai) hits its best weather — days around 25–30°C, cool evenings. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak) is in full dry season with calm seas. Bangkok is at its most comfortable. The Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) have their own rainy season in November–December before improving in January.
What is the weather like in Thailand in December?
December is peak cool season across most of Thailand. The north can be genuinely cold at night (10–15°C in Chiang Mai and the mountains, sometimes lower). The Andaman coast has clear, calm seas with excellent diving conditions. Bangkok is pleasant — warm days around 28–30°C, cool evenings. It's the busiest and most expensive month; book accommodation early.
Is November a good time to visit Thailand?
November is an excellent time — the cool season is beginning, prices are lower than December–February peak, and crowds are manageable. The Loi Krathong lantern festival (usually November) is one of Thailand's most beautiful celebrations, particularly in Sukhothai and Chiang Mai. The Andaman coast has excellent weather. The Gulf coast is still in its rainy period in early November.
Where should I go in Thailand in January?
January is the height of Thailand's cool season. Chiang Mai is at its most beautiful — cool mornings, clear skies, and festivals. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak) is prime beach weather with the best diving visibility. Bangkok is comfortable for city touring. Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are recovering from their rainy period and are good from mid-January.
Are Thailand hotels more expensive in the cool season?
Yes. November to February is peak season, and hotel rates reflect the demand. December and January are the most expensive months across all Thai tourist destinations. EezyStay's lower commission model provides some price advantage over the major OTAs even during peak season, and booking early locks in better rates before seasonal price increases fully take effect.
