Best Hotels in Khao Lak 2026 — Beaches, Similan Islands & Where to Stay

Khao Lak is the low-key answer to Phuket. Same Andaman coast, same pristine water, same spectacular diving — but without the chaos, the overcrowded beaches, or the tourist-trap pricing. It's about 80km north of Phuket airport, and for many travellers, it's the better base.

The big draw is the Similan Islands — an archipelago of granite boulder islands with some of the best dive sites in Southeast Asia. Khao Lak is the jumping-off point. Most dive boats leave from Tab Lamu Pier, which is a 20-minute drive south of town.

But even if you don't dive, Khao Lak is worth a visit in its own right. Long, quiet beaches. National park on your doorstep. Good food without paying Patong prices.

Here's where to stay.

Best Hotels in Khao Lak

La Flora Resort Khao Lak

One of Khao Lak's premium properties. Stunning pool villas, beachfront access, excellent spa, and a restaurant that's good enough to eat at every night. The villas surrounded by tropical gardens are genuinely beautiful. Rates from around 5,500 THB per night. Booking.com and Agoda mark this up — check EezyStay for the real rate.

Khaolak Laguna Resort

Consistently one of the best mid-range to upper-mid options in Khao Lak. Well-maintained rooms, a large pool, lovely beachfront location, and a team that handles Similan Island dive trip bookings efficiently. Rates from around 2,500 THB per night.

Baan Khaolak Beach Resort

Smaller, more intimate than the big resorts. Lovely beachfront bungalows, excellent Thai food at the in-house restaurant, and a relaxed vibe that suits people who want to switch off. Rates from 1,800–3,500 THB per night depending on room type and season.

Nangthong Bay Resort

A longtime Khao Lak favourite. Good location, reliable quality, pool with beach access. The staff here are particularly helpful for organising tours, snorkel trips, and day excursions. Mid-range: around 2,000–3,500 THB per night.

Budget Guesthouses (Bang Niang Market Area)

For budget travellers, the area around Bang Niang Market has a cluster of small guesthouses and simple bungalow operations. Expect 600–1,200 THB per night for a clean, fan or air-con room with breakfast. The market itself is excellent for cheap food and morning coffee.

Area Guide: Where to Stay in Khao Lak

Khao Lak Town / Bang Niang

The main strip. Most restaurants, shops, tour operators, and mid-range guesthouses are here. Walking distance to the beach. Good base for first-time visitors.

Nang Thong Beach

Just south of the town centre. The most popular beach area, with a good mix of mid-range and upscale accommodation. The beach here is excellent — long, clean, and usually quiet compared to anything in Phuket.

Pakarang Beach (North of Bang Niang)

Quieter stretch of coast with some of the upscale resort properties. More secluded, better if you want peace over convenience.

Khuk Khak Beach

The most northerly beach area, very quiet. A handful of high-end resorts here. If total relaxation is the goal, this is your spot.

The Similan Islands: What You Need to Know

The Similan Islands (Mu Ko Similan National Park) are 84km offshore. The park is only open October to May — it closes June through September to allow reef recovery during monsoon season.

Dive liveaboards — The gold standard experience. Most liveaboards depart from Tab Lamu Pier. 2–4 night trips from around 10,000–20,000 THB per person. Book these in advance, especially in December to March when they fill up fast.

Day trips — Speedboat day trips depart daily from Tab Lamu Pier during the open season. Around 3,000–4,000 THB including snorkelling gear. Good introduction but long days.

Dive courses — Khao Lak has several reputable PADI dive centres. Open Water course from around 12,000–15,000 THB.

What Else to Do in Khao Lak

Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park — A vast protected area surrounding the Khao Lak coastline. Hiking trails, waterfalls, and almost no other tourists. The Hat Khao Lak beach within the park is one of the most beautiful in the region.

Tsunami Memorial — One of the areas worst affected by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. A police boat (Police Boat 813) was carried 2km inland by the wave and now sits as a memorial. A sobering but important visit.

Cheow Lan Lake (Khao Sok) — About 90 minutes east of Khao Lak, Khao Sok National Park has dramatic limestone karsts rising from a vast lake. Overnight floating raft houses are possible and incredible. Many Khao Lak tour operators run day trips and overnight packages.

Cooking Classes — Several operations in the Bang Niang area run Thai cooking classes. A good half-day activity. Around 1,200–1,800 THB including market visit and full meal.

Getting to Khao Lak

From Phuket Airport: The most common route. Direct minivans and shared transfers run regularly, about 1.5–2 hours and 350–500 THB per person. Private taxis cost 1,200–1,800 THB.

From Surat Thani: If coming from Koh Samui or the Gulf side, ferry to Donsak, then bus or minivan north. Around 4–5 hours total.

From Bangkok: Fly to Phuket (45 minutes) and transfer, or take the overnight train to Phun Phin and bus north.

What Does It Cost?

Budget: 700–1,500 THB per night (fan bungalows, guesthouses) Mid-range: 1,500–3,500 THB per night (beach resort rooms, air-con, pool) Upscale: 3,500–8,000+ THB per night (pool villas, beachfront resorts)

Why EezyStay Over Agoda or Booking.com for Khao Lak?

Khao Lak resorts are well aware of how much margin Agoda and Booking.com take. The commission rates these platforms charge — often 18–25% — get built into the room rate you see as a consumer. Smaller Khao Lak properties can't afford to simply absorb that hit.

EezyStay specialises in Thailand, negotiates lower commission rates, and passes the difference to the traveller. On a 3-night stay at a mid-range Khao Lak resort, that can easily be 1,500–3,000 THB saved.

Khao Lak is what Phuket used to be before it got discovered. Quieter, better value, and with some of the best diving in the world just offshore.
