Cheap Hotels in Koh Chang 2026 — Affordable Island Stays Under 1,500 THB
Koh Chang has a reputation as one of Thailand's pricier island destinations — partly fair, partly a myth created by the big OTAs pushing promoted resort properties. Yes, the upscale resorts here cost serious money. But there's a solid budget tier that rarely gets the attention it deserves.
You can stay on Koh Chang for 600–1,200 THB per night and have a genuinely comfortable experience: clean rooms, good fans or air-con, beach access within walking distance, and the same sunsets that guests at the 5,000 THB resort are getting for free. This guide shows you where.
Best Budget Accommodation on Koh Chang
Apple Guesthouse (Lonely Beach)
The classic budget choice on Koh Chang. Simple fan bungalows, hammocks outside, a lively bar and restaurant, and a beachy, traveller-friendly atmosphere. Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam) is the backpacker zone of the island — smaller, younger, more social. Rooms from around 400–800 THB per night.
Treehouse Lodge (Lonely Beach)
One of the more atmospheric budget options in Thailand. Wooden bungalows literally built into the trees above Lonely Beach, accessed by rope bridges and stairs carved into the rock. It's unconventional and not suited for everyone, but if you want something genuinely unique at budget prices (500–900 THB per night), this is it.
Oasis Resort (White Sand Beach Area)
A step up from the Lonely Beach crowd, Oasis offers simple but decent bungalows and rooms near the northern part of the island at competitive prices. From around 800–1,500 THB per night. Pool on-site.
Magic Resort (Hat Kai Bae)
Small, relaxed bungalow resort on Kai Bae Beach — a quieter spot than White Sand Beach but still convenient. Simple rooms from around 700–1,200 THB per night. The beach here is less crowded and the vibe is calmer.
Palms on the Rocks (Kai Bae Beach)
Well-regarded budget option with excellent sea views. Clean, simple rooms carved into a rocky headland. From around 800–1,300 THB per night. Booking fills up quickly for this one — it's a poorly-kept secret among return visitors.
Guesthouses Near Ban Khlong Son
The northern tip of the island near the ferry piers has a handful of very basic guesthouses used mostly by locals and budget backpackers in transit. Expect 400–700 THB per night — basic but functional.
How to Save Money on Koh Chang
Come in low season. High season is November to May. Low season is June to October. Koh Chang is in the Gulf of Thailand — it does get some rain in the monsoon, but the island is large enough that it's often patchy. Low season accommodation prices drop 30–50%. A bungalow that costs 1,200 THB in December might be 700 THB in July.
Stay at Lonely Beach. White Sand Beach is the main tourist strip and accommodation prices reflect that. Lonely Beach is about 20km south and notably cheaper. You'll need a songthaew or motorbike to get around, but the savings are real.
Eat local. The seafood restaurants on the beach strips charge tourist prices. Walk a block or two back toward the road and you'll find local Thai restaurants serving excellent food at 80–150 THB per dish. The local market near Lonely Beach is excellent for cheap morning food.
Rent a motorbike. 250–350 THB per day. The island has one main road running north to south along the west coast. A motorbike makes everything accessible — beaches, waterfalls, food options — without needing expensive taxis or tours.
Negotiate for longer stays. If you're staying a week or more, ask about weekly rates. Many budget guesthouses on Koh Chang offer 10–15% discounts for stays of 5+ nights.
Budget for a Week on Koh Chang
Accommodation (budget bungalow): 800 THB/night x 7 = 5,600 THB Food (mix of street food and restaurants): 350 THB/day = 2,450 THB Motorbike rental: 300 THB/day x 7 = 2,100 THB Day trip to Koh Wai (snorkelling): 1,200 THB Beer and sundries: ~1,500 THB
Total: approximately 12,850 THB (around $360 USD) for a week. That includes a day trip to one of the most beautiful islands in the Gulf of Thailand.
Getting to Koh Chang on a Budget
By bus + ferry: The cheapest route from Bangkok. Air-con bus from Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) to Laem Ngop pier, then ferry to the island. Total around 300–400 THB all-in.
Night bus: Overnight buses from Bangkok drop you at the ferry pier in the morning. You save a night's accommodation. Around 400–500 THB.
Minivan: From Bangkok's On Nut or Victory Monument areas. Slightly faster than the bus, around 350 THB.
What's Near Lonely Beach?
If you're staying on the budget end at Lonely Beach, here's what's walking distance:
- Hat Tha Nam beach (small but pretty)
- Klong Plu Waterfall (short tuk-tuk ride or long walk)
- Several good restaurants and bars
- Small convenience stores
- The sea
What's NOT walking distance: White Sand Beach, the main resort strip, and the ferry pier. Budget transport (songthaews run along the main road) connects everything for 30–50 THB per ride.
EezyStay vs. Agoda for Budget Koh Chang
Agoda loves pushing resort properties because that's where the big commissions are. The budget bungalow operations on Koh Chang — particularly on Lonely Beach and Kai Bae — are often buried or absent from Agoda's promoted results.
EezyStay's Thailand-focused model covers the smaller properties better, and because our commission rates are lower, the prices listed for budget accommodation are closer to what you'd actually pay if you showed up in person.
Koh Chang on a budget is a great experience. The island hasn't been over-polished. There are still places where you can get a cold beer, a hammock view of the sea, and a fan bungalow for 700 baht a night. Those places are getting rarer. Book one.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest beach on Koh Chang for budget travellers?
Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam) is Koh Chang's most budget-friendly area, with bungalow operations from 600–1,000 THB per night. It has a more backpacker-oriented atmosphere than White Sand Beach, with simple restaurants and a laid-back vibe that suits long-stay budget travellers.
Can I find accommodation on Koh Chang for under 1,000 THB per night?
Yes. Simple fan bungalows at Lonely Beach and some guesthouses near White Sand Beach start from 600–900 THB per night in low season. Air-con rooms at budget operations start from around 800–1,200 THB. Prices rise significantly on weekends and during peak season (December to February) when Bangkok families fill the island.
Is Koh Chang good for budget backpackers?
Koh Chang is a reasonable budget destination but sits slightly above Koh Phangan or Koh Tao in baseline cost. The remoteness (bus plus ferry from Bangkok) adds to transport costs. Lonely Beach is the budget backpacker hub, with cheap bungalows, beach bars, and a social atmosphere. Food is cheapest at the small local restaurants rather than the resort restaurants.
How do I get to Koh Chang cheaply from Bangkok?
The cheapest route is a bus from Ekkamai Bus Terminal to Laem Ngop Pier (around 200–250 THB), then the vehicle ferry to Koh Chang (around 80 THB for passengers). Total transport cost is under 350 THB. The journey takes 4–5 hours by bus plus the 30-minute ferry crossing.
Is Koh Chang or Koh Samet cheaper?
Koh Samet is closer to Bangkok and marginally cheaper for short weekend trips — transport costs less and the island has more budget options near Hat Sai Kaew. Koh Chang is significantly cheaper for longer stays once you're there — more budget bungalow options, cheaper food, and a larger island with more variety. Book either through EezyStay for below-OTA rates.
