Bangkok to Chiang Mai Sleeper Train — The Classic Thai Journey

Bangkok to Chiang Mai Sleeper Train — The Classic Thai Journey

June 23, 2026

The Bangkok to Chiang Mai sleeper train is one of the last great overnight rail journeys in Southeast Asia. Thirteen hours through rice paddies, past small-town stations, and into the northern mountains — all while you sleep in a gently rocking berth.

The Route

The train departs Bangkok in the early evening and arrives in Chiang Mai the following morning. The route runs north through the central plains, passing through: - Ayutthaya (1.5 hours out) — The old capital, visible from the train - Lopburi (3 hours) — Monkey town - Nakhon Sawan (5 hours) — River junction - Lampang (11 hours) — Northern city with horse-drawn carriages - Chiang Mai (13-15 hours) — Morning arrival

Sleeper Class Comparison

Class Berth AC Price (THB) Best For
1st Class Private 2-berth cabin Yes 1,300-1,600 Couples, privacy
2nd Class Upper (AC) Open berth, curtain Yes 700-800 Solo budget
2nd Class Lower (AC) Open berth, curtain Yes 800-1,000 Wider, window view
2nd Class (Fan) Open berth, curtain No 500-600 Budget in cool season

Always book lower berth if possible. Lower berths are wider, have a window, and convert to a seat during the day. Upper berths are narrower and feel more claustrophobic.

The Experience

Evening: Your berth starts as a forward-facing seat. After departure, the attendant converts seats into sleeping berths with clean sheets, a pillow, and a curtain for privacy. It's surprisingly comfortable.

Dinner: A dining car serves Thai food (60-120 THB per dish). The menu is basic but the experience of eating pad thai while Thailand rolls past the window is unbeatable. Alternatively, buy food at the station before departure — Hua Lamphong has decent stalls.

Night: The gentle rocking and clickety-clack of the rails is genuinely soothing. AC berths can get cold — bring a light jacket. Earplugs help if you're a light sleeper.

Morning: Wake to mountain scenery as the train climbs into Chiang Mai province. The attendant serves coffee and the berths convert back to seats for the final hour.

Arriving in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai Station is east of the Old City: - Songthaew: 30-50 THB to the Old City (shared, follow the crowd) - Grab taxi: 60-100 THB to Old City hotels - Walk: About 30 minutes to Tha Phae Gate — doable with light luggage

FAQ

Is the sleeper train comfortable?

More comfortable than you'd expect. The berths are clean, sheets are fresh, and the rocking motion helps sleep. It's not a five-star hotel, but it's significantly better than an overnight bus and saves a night's accommodation cost.

Is the Bangkok-Chiang Mai train worth it vs flying?

If you value the journey as much as the destination, absolutely. Flights take 1 hour and cost 1,000-3,000 THB. The train takes 13 hours and costs 500-1,600 THB. You lose a day but gain an experience, save a hotel night, and see Thailand's countryside. Take the train one way and fly the other.

Can I take the sleeper train with children?

Yes. Children under 100cm ride free. Children 100-150cm pay half fare. Lower berths are wide enough for a parent and small child. The gentle motion actually helps kids sleep. Bring snacks, entertainment for the evening before lights out, and a change of clothes.
