Get PADI Certified in Thailand — Best Dive Schools and Hotels

June 23, 2026

Thailand is one of the cheapest and most beautiful places in the world to get PADI certified. Warm water, incredible marine life, and dive schools that have trained hundreds of thousands of divers.

Best Islands for Dive Certification

Koh Tao — The Dive Capital

More divers are certified on Koh Tao than almost anywhere else in the world. Competition between schools keeps prices low and quality high.

Cost: PADI Open Water: 9,000-11,000 THB (includes all equipment, materials, and often accommodation) Duration: 3-4 days Conditions: Clear water year-round, gentle currents, shallow training sites

Top schools: Ban's Diving, Crystal Dive, Big Blue Diving

Koh Lanta

Quieter alternative to Koh Tao with access to excellent Andaman Sea dive sites including Hin Daeng and Hin Muang (Thailand's best wall diving).

Cost: PADI Open Water: 12,000-15,000 THB Duration: 3-4 days

Koh Phi Phi

Stunning scenery above and below water. Shark Point and the King Cruiser wreck are highlights. More expensive than Koh Tao but the setting is dramatic.

Cost: PADI Open Water: 13,000-16,000 THB

What PADI Open Water Involves

Day 1: Theory and confined water (pool) sessions. Learn equipment setup, breathing, clearing your mask, and basic skills in shallow water.

Day 2: More confined water training plus your first open water dive. Usually a shallow site (8-12 metres) with lots of fish to keep you interested.

Day 3-4: Open water dives 2-4. Deeper sites (up to 18 metres), skill demonstrations, and free time to enjoy the reef. By dive 4, you're cruising.

What you get: A PADI Open Water Diver certification card valid worldwide for life. Certifies you to dive to 18 metres with a buddy.

Accommodation for Dive Students

Most Koh Tao dive schools include basic accommodation: - Included dorms: Fan rooms with shared bathrooms, basic but functional - Upgrade options: AC rooms, private bathrooms for 500-1,500 THB extra - Independent accommodation: Stay nearby and walk to the dive school. Koh Tao has rooms from 400 THB/night independent of dive schools.

On Koh Lanta and Phi Phi, accommodation is usually separate from the dive school. Budget guesthouses near the dive centres from 500-1,000 THB/night.

Beyond Open Water

Once certified, popular next steps in Thailand: - Advanced Open Water: 2 days, 8,000-10,000 THB. Dive to 30 metres. - Rescue Diver: 3-4 days, 10,000-12,000 THB. Learn emergency procedures. - Divemaster: 4-8 weeks, 25,000-35,000 THB. Professional-level training.

FAQ

Is it safe to learn scuba diving in Thailand?

Yes — Thailand's established dive schools follow international PADI standards with experienced instructors. The warm, calm waters (especially Koh Tao) make learning comfortable. Choose a school with good reviews, proper insurance, and small class sizes (max 4 students per instructor is ideal).

What's the best time to learn to dive in Thailand?

Gulf of Thailand (Koh Tao, Koh Phangan): March to September for best visibility. Andaman Sea (Koh Lanta, Phi Phi): November to April. Water is warm enough to dive year-round in a shortie wetsuit or rash guard.

How much does it cost in total to get certified in Thailand?

Budget 12,000-18,000 THB total: course fees (9,000-15,000 THB) plus accommodation (free-1,500 THB/night for 4 nights) plus food (200-400 THB/day). That's roughly $350-$530 USD — a fraction of certification costs in Western countries.
