Lamai Beach Hotels Koh Samui — The Surfer's Alternative to Chaweng

June 23, 2026

Lamai is Koh Samui's second beach — less developed than Chaweng, better surf, and prices that are 20-30% lower for comparable quality. If Chaweng is Koh Samui's Patong, Lamai is its Kata.

Why Choose Lamai

The beach is gorgeous — a wide crescent of golden sand bookended by dramatic rock formations (including the famous Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks). The surf is generally bigger than Chaweng, making it better for body surfing and boogie boarding.

The town behind the beach has restaurants, bars, and shops, but the scale is human. You can walk from one end to the other in 20 minutes. There's nightlife, but it peaks at pleasant rather than deafening.

Where to Stay

Luxury

Banyan Tree Samui — Not technically Lamai (it's on a private bay between Lamai and Chaweng) but it's the closest luxury option. Private pool villas with sweeping ocean views. 10,000-30,000 THB/night.

Renaissance Koh Samui Resort & Spa — At the north end of Lamai, on its own beach cove. 4,000-10,000 THB/night.

Mid-Range

Lamai Wanta Beach Resort — Right on the sand, good pool, decent rooms. The best value beachfront hotel on Lamai. 1,500-3,500 THB/night.

Samui Jasmine Resort — Garden-set resort a short walk from the beach. 1,200-2,500 THB/night.

Budget

New Hut Lamai — Bungalows right on the beach at backpacker prices. Basic but the location is unbeatable. 500-1,000 THB/night.

Lamai Bayview Resort — Clean rooms with pool access. 600-1,200 THB/night.

Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks (Hin Ta Hin Yai)

Koh Samui's most photographed natural feature — two rock formations that resemble, well, anatomical features. Located at the south end of Lamai Beach, free to view. It's touristy but genuinely amusing and the surrounding coastline is beautiful for photos.

Eating in Lamai

  • Lamai Night Plaza — Evening food market with Thai street food stalls. Best value dining on the beach road.
  • Baobab — French-Thai fusion. One of the best restaurants in Lamai.
  • Beach restaurants — Several beachfront restaurants offer candlelit dining on the sand. More romantic than Chaweng's beach dining at lower prices.

Activities

  • Surf and body board — Lamai has better waves than Chaweng, especially from October to December
  • Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks — The famous formation at the south end
  • Overlap Stone (Hin Lad) — Balancing boulder viewpoint, 15 minutes inland
  • Namuang Waterfalls — Two waterfalls in the island interior, 20-minute drive. Swimming at the first waterfall is excellent.
  • Muay Thai — Several gyms in Lamai offer training and host regular fight nights

FAQ

Is Lamai Beach better than Chaweng?

It depends on what you want. Lamai is better for: relaxation, surf, lower prices, a more local feel. Chaweng is better for: nightlife, shopping, beach length, and range of restaurants. Many repeat visitors to Koh Samui prefer Lamai.

Can you surf at Lamai Beach?

The waves at Lamai are bigger than most Koh Samui beaches, making it suitable for body surfing and boogie boarding. Real stand-up surfing is possible from October to December when swells pick up, but don't expect Bali-quality waves — Koh Samui isn't a surf destination.

How far is Lamai from Chaweng?

About 10 kilometres, or 15-20 minutes by taxi/Grab. A songthaew (shared taxi truck) costs 100-200 THB. You can easily stay in Lamai and visit Chaweng for an evening out.
