Fisherman's Village Bophut Koh Samui — The Island's Most Charming Area
While Chaweng Beach gets the party crowd and Lamai draws the surfers, Fisherman's Village in Bophut quietly remains the most charming area on Koh Samui. It's where the island still feels like an island.
What Makes Fisherman's Village Special
The village is a single narrow street of converted Chinese-Thai shophouses running parallel to the beach. These old fisherman's homes now house boutique hotels, art galleries, wine bars, and restaurants — but the scale is human, the architecture is authentic, and the pace is unhurried.
Unlike Chaweng's strip of 7-Elevens and tailors, Fisherman's Village has curated its development. You'll find independent coffee roasters, Thai ceramic artists, handmade jewelry shops, and genuinely good restaurants rather than tourist traps.
The Friday Night Market
Every Friday from 5 PM, the village street closes to traffic and becomes one of Koh Samui's best markets. Think night market meets village fete: - Live music on the beach - Thai street food at local prices (40-80 THB per dish) - Handmade crafts, art, and clothing - Fire dancers and performers after dark
Arrive by 5:30 PM for the best food selection. By 7 PM it's packed. The market runs until around 10:30 PM.

FAQ
Is Fisherman's Village better than Chaweng?
For atmosphere, dining quality, and charm — yes. For nightlife, shopping variety, and beach length — Chaweng wins. Fisherman's Village is better for couples, older travellers, and anyone who values character over convenience. Chaweng is better for partying and having everything within walking distance.
Is Bophut beach good for swimming?
Yes — it's one of the calmer beaches on Koh Samui with gentle waves and a sandy bottom. The water isn't as crystal-clear as Chaweng but it's less crowded and the views across to Koh Phangan are lovely.
How do you get to Fisherman's Village from the airport?
Koh Samui airport is about 7 kilometres away — 15-20 minutes by taxi. Airport taxis are fixed-rate at around 500 THB. Grab is cheaper (200-350 THB) but availability varies.
