Koh Lipe Sunrise Beach Hotels — Thailand's Most Beautiful Island Beach

Koh Lipe Sunrise Beach Hotels — Thailand's Most Beautiful Island Beach

June 23, 2026

Koh Lipe sits at the bottom of Thailand, almost in Malaysian waters, in the Tarutao National Marine Park. Sunrise Beach — the island's east-facing shore — is where the magic happens: soft coral reef starting metres from the sand, crystal water, and sunrises that justify the name.

Why Sunrise Beach

Three things make it special: 1. The house reef — Snorkeling gear on, walk into the water, and you're swimming with clownfish, parrotfish, and sea turtles within 20 metres of shore. No boat needed. 2. The sunrise — East-facing means you wake to pink-orange skies over the Andaman. 3. The calm water — Protected from monsoon swells, Sunrise Beach is swimmable even during shoulder season.

Hotels on Sunrise Beach

Luxury

Akira Lipe — The most upscale property on Sunrise Beach. Modern design, pool, beachfront restaurant. 4,000-10,000 THB/night depending on season.

Bundhaya Villas — Not on Sunrise but on Bundhaya Beach nearby, with a shuttle. Overwater bungalows with glass floors. 5,000-12,000 THB/night.

Mid-Range

Castaway Resort — The best value on Sunrise Beach. Wooden beachfront bungalows with character, right above the reef. Book early — it fills fast. 2,000-4,000 THB/night.

Mali Resort — Set in gardens behind Sunrise Beach. Pool, clean rooms, 3-minute walk to the sand. 1,500-3,000 THB/night.

Budget

Bloom Cafe and Hostel — The backpacker option on Walking Street (5 minutes from Sunrise Beach). 400-800 THB/night.

Finding genuine budget beachfront on Koh Lipe is tough — the island is small and demand is high. Low season (May-October) sees prices drop 40-50%.

Getting to Koh Lipe

No airport. Access by boat only: - From Pak Bara pier (Satun): Speedboat 1.5 hours, ferry 3 hours. Pak Bara is reachable by bus from Hat Yai (2 hours) or minivan from Krabi (4 hours). - From Langkawi, Malaysia: Speedboat 1.5 hours (seasonal, November-April). An interesting cross-border route. - From Koh Lanta: Speedboat 2-3 hours (seasonal).

All boats arrive at a floating pier — you wade ashore or take a longtail boat to your chosen beach. It's part of the adventure.

The Three Beaches

  • Sunrise Beach (east): Best reef, best sunrise, quietest. The top choice.
  • Sunset Beach (west): Sunset views, fewer hotels, rougher water during monsoon.
  • Pattaya Beach (south): Most developed, Walking Street, nightlife such as it is. The arrival beach.

Island Life

Koh Lipe is tiny — 2 km long, 1 km wide. Walking Street connects the beaches and has restaurants, dive shops, and mini-marts. No cars on the island (motorised transport is longtail boats and a few motorbikes).

  • Snorkeling day trips: 4-island or 8-island tours, 600-1,500 THB. The Tarutao National Marine Park coral is among the best in Thailand.
  • Diving: Multiple dive shops, sites within 30 minutes by boat. PADI courses from 10,000 THB.
  • Kayaking: Paddle to nearby islands, rent from the beach (200 THB/hour).

FAQ

When is the best time to visit Koh Lipe?

November to April is high season — best weather, calmest seas, all services running. December-January is peak (and most expensive). May-October is monsoon season; some hotels and restaurants close, boat services reduce, but prices drop significantly and the island is emptier.

Is Koh Lipe expensive?

By Thai island standards, yes. The remoteness means everything arrives by boat, pushing prices up 30-50% versus the mainland. Budget 2,000-3,000 THB/day minimum. In high season, rooms book out and prices spike — book months ahead for December-February.

Can you see turtles snorkeling at Sunrise Beach?

Yes — sea turtles are regularly spotted on the house reef, particularly in the early morning. They feed on sea grass near the south end of the beach. It's not guaranteed, but sightings are common enough that most multi-day visitors see at least one.
