Koh Lipe Hotels and How to Get There: The Complete Access Guide
Koh Lipe is the destination people describe as "what Koh Phi Phi was like before everyone found it." White sand beaches, crystal water, walking street lined with restaurants and bars, and enough accommodation to be comfortable without being overdeveloped. The problem — and the feature — is that getting there requires planning. There's no airport, no direct road, and the boat services shut down entirely in low season.
This guide covers exactly how to get there, when to go, and where to stay once you arrive.
The Island Basics
Koh Lipe sits in the Andaman Sea in Satun Province, about 2 kilometres from the Thai-Malaysian maritime border. It's administratively part of Tarutao National Park. The island is approximately 4 km long and 2 km wide. The three main beaches are:
- Sunrise Beach (Hat Chaow Leh): Longest beach, most hotels, calm morning sea
- Sunset Beach: Rockier, dramatic sunsets, fewer hotels
- Pattaya Beach: Most central, closest to Walking Street, most activity
Walking Street connects the island's interior — it's a narrow pedestrian strip of restaurants, bars, travel agents, and shops. No motorised vehicles exist on most of the island (they came in when the main road was built but the core areas remain foot-traffic only).
When Koh Lipe Is Open
This is critical: Koh Lipe is a seasonal island.
Open season: Mid-October to mid-May Closed season: Mid-May to mid-October (monsoon, rough seas, most businesses shut)
Do not plan a trip to Koh Lipe outside this window. Ferries stop running, most accommodation closes, and the few things that remain open do so in a ghost-town context. Even within the open season, November and May can be weather-variable.
Best months: December to April — peak season, best weather, busiest crowds, highest prices. Good value months: November, late October, early May — shoulder season, decent weather, 20–30% cheaper.
How to Get to Koh Lipe
There is no quick way to Koh Lipe. Accept this and plan accordingly. Getting there is part of the experience.
Option 1: From Pak Bara Pier (Closest Mainland Access)
Pak Bara is a small pier town in Satun Province, about 60 km from Hat Yai city.
Step 1: Get to Hat Yai - Fly Bangkok to Hat Yai (HDY): 1h 30min, 800–2,500 THB - Overnight train from Bangkok to Hat Yai: 12–15 hours, 600–1,400 THB (sleeper) - Bus from Bangkok: 14–16 hours, 700–1,200 THB
Step 2: Hat Yai to Pak Bara Pier - Shared minivan: approximately 120 km, 150–200 THB, 1.5–2 hours - Taxi: 800–1,200 THB
Step 3: Pak Bara to Koh Lipe by Ferry - High-speed catamaran: 1h 30min–2 hours depending on sea conditions - Operators: Satun Pakbara Speedboat Club, Tigerline, Boonsiri - Fare: 600–900 THB one way - Departures: Check specific operator schedules — typically 1–3 departures per day in season
Total from Bangkok: 6–8 hours travel time minimum, 1,400–4,000 THB depending on choices.
Option 2: From Langkawi, Malaysia (The Scenic Back Door)
Langkawi is a Malaysian island with its own international airport (LGK). A fast boat crosses the Thai-Malaysian border to Koh Lipe in about 90 minutes.
Who this suits: - Travellers already in Malaysia or Singapore - Those combining Thailand and Malaysia in one trip - Anyone doing a border crossing for visa purposes
Key details: - Immigration is processed on the boat or at Koh Lipe's Customs Pier - Ensure your Thai visa/exemption situation is sorted before arriving from Malaysia - Fare: MYR 100–150 (approximately 800–1,200 THB one way)
Operators: Bundhaya Speed Boat, Langkawi Ferry Service. Services typically run November–May only.
Option 3: From Koh Lanta or Krabi (Island Hopping Route)
During peak season, speedboat services connect Koh Lanta, Krabi, Koh Ngai, and Koh Lipe in a multi-stop ferry service.
- Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe: approximately 3–4 hours, 1,200–1,800 THB
- Krabi to Koh Lipe: approximately 5–6 hours (with stops), 1,500–2,500 THB
Operators: Tigerline Ferry, Satun Pakbara Speedboat Club
This route only operates November–May and can be cancelled at short notice in poor weather. Build in flexibility — don't book flights that same day.
Arriving at Koh Lipe: The Customs Pier
There is no pier in the traditional sense. Ferries anchor offshore and passengers transfer to longtail boats that take you to the beach or Customs Pier. In low tide, you may need to wade the last few metres. Shoes that can get wet are practical.
The Customs Pier (immigration area) is where visas and passport stamps are processed if arriving from Malaysia. Arrivals from within Thailand just go straight to the beach.

Booking Advice
Koh Lipe hotel inventory is small. In December and January especially, the popular mid-range resorts sell out. Book 4–8 weeks ahead for peak season, or accept significantly more limited choices.
Compare prices on EezyStay before committing — EezyStay covers Thai island accommodation and frequently offers lower rates than Agoda and Booking.com, particularly for smaller boutique properties that don't have the marketing budget to compete with the big OTAs. The savings on a 7-night stay can be significant.
Getting Around Koh Lipe
Walking is the main mode of transport — the island is small enough that Sunrise Beach to Pattaya Beach is a 15–20 minute walk through the interior. Longtail boats take you to nearby islands for snorkelling (hire one from the beach, negotiate the price: 500–1,500 THB depending on distance and duration).
Motorbikes and taxis exist but are limited to the road that was built in recent years. For most purposes, you walk.
Snorkelling and Diving
The marine environment around Koh Lipe is exceptional — part of Tarutao National Park, so fishing restrictions have protected the reef. Leopard sharks, turtles, lionfish, and spectacular coral gardens are common sightings. The best snorkelling is around the uninhabited islands of the Adang-Rawi Archipelago: Koh Adang, Koh Rawi, and Koh Yang.
Dive operators on Walking Street offer fun dives and certification courses. Open Water certification: approximately 12,000–15,000 THB.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to Koh Lipe from Bangkok?
The most efficient route is: fly Bangkok to Hat Yai (1h 30min, 800–2,500 THB), then take a minivan to Pak Bara pier (1.5–2 hours, 150–200 THB), then a high-speed ferry to Koh Lipe (90 minutes, 600–900 THB). Total journey time from Bangkok is approximately 5–7 hours. Book ferries in advance in peak season.
Is Koh Lipe worth the effort to get to?
Yes — consistently ranked as one of Thailand's most beautiful islands for good reason. The effort involved is actually what keeps it from becoming overdeveloped. If you have time for at least 4 nights, the journey is absolutely worthwhile. The snorkelling, beaches, and low-key atmosphere are genuinely exceptional.
When is Koh Lipe closed?
Koh Lipe's tourism season runs mid-October to mid-May. Outside this window, the monsoon makes sea crossings dangerous and most accommodation closes. Do not plan a visit in June, July, August, or September — the island essentially shuts down.
How much does accommodation in Koh Lipe cost?
Budget bungalows start around 700–1,200 THB/night. Mid-range resorts run 2,000–5,000 THB/night. Boutique resorts with private pools start from 5,000 THB and reach 12,000+ THB/night. Prices are higher than equivalent quality on more accessible islands due to the remoteness and limited supply. Book early for December–February peak season.
