Hotels Near the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), Chiang Rai: Where to Stay

April 19, 2026

Wat Rong Khun — the White Temple — is one of Thailand's most photographed buildings. A contemporary Buddhist temple built by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat since 1997, it's made entirely of white plaster embedded with mirrored glass, creating a building that shimmers in sunlight in a way that feels genuinely surreal. It's 13 km south of Chiang Rai city, making it easy to combine with the city's other excellent attractions.

Most visitors to the White Temple day-trip from Chiang Mai (a 3-hour drive). But Chiang Rai deserves more than a day — the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), Black House (Baan Dam Museum), the Golden Triangle, and the local hill tribe areas all reward staying 2–3 nights.

About the White Temple (Practical Details)

Location: 13 km south of Chiang Rai on Route 1, near the town of Mae Lao.

Entry fee: 100 THB (foreigners). Free for Thais.

Opening hours: 6:30am–6pm (closed during lunch 12pm–1pm on weekdays).

Photography: The exterior is freely photographable. The interior (ubosot) prohibits photography — this is enforced.

What to expect: The temple complex includes the main ubosot (monks' room), a museum, a golden tower (Suphan Hong), and artist studios. The detail is extraordinary — look for unexpected modern images in the murals (superheroes, characters from pop culture) and the pit of disembodied hands reaching up beneath the entrance bridge (representing desire and suffering in Buddhist symbolism).

Avoiding crowds: Arrive before 9am or after 3pm. The 10am–2pm window is when tour buses from Chiang Mai arrive and the temple becomes very crowded.

Where to Stay: The Options

You have two main choices: stay in Chiang Rai city (13 km from the temple) or stay near the White Temple itself (very limited options).

For most visitors, Chiang Rai city is the better base. You're 20 minutes from the White Temple by scooter or songthaew, and the city itself has the Blue Temple, Night Bazaar, Saturday and Sunday Walking Streets, and much better food and accommodation variety.
