762 Curves of Mountain Road

The road from Chiang Mai to Pai (Route 1095) is legendary — 135km of hairpin turns through northern Thailand's mountains. It's beautiful and nauseating in equal measure. The journey takes 3-4 hours regardless of transport, and how you travel determines whether you enjoy it or endure it.

Minivan (Most Popular)

Time: 3-3.5 hours. Cost: 150-250 THB. Departures: Hourly from Chiang Mai's Chang Phuak bus station and Arcade bus station, 7am to 5pm. Aya Service is the most popular operator. Warning: Thai minivan drivers on this route are aggressive. Sit in the front if you get carsick. Take motion sickness tablets 30 minutes before departure — this is not optional advice.

Renting a Scooter

Time: 4-5 hours (with stops). Cost: 200-300 THB/day rental. For: Experienced riders only. The road is steep, winding, and shared with buses and trucks. The scenery is spectacular with multiple viewpoints and waterfalls to stop at. Fuel up in Chiang Mai — there are few petrol stations on the route. Important: You need a valid motorcycle licence and comprehensive insurance. Accidents on this road are common and medical facilities between the two towns are basic.

Public Bus

Time: 4 hours. Cost: 100-150 THB. Departures: Less frequent than minivans. Larger vehicle = smoother ride. Better for motion-sensitive travellers. Departs from Arcade Bus Station.
