June 23, 2026

Doi Suthep is Chiang Mai's spiritual landmark — a golden temple perched 1,060 metres above the city, visible from almost everywhere in town. The locals say you haven't visited Chiang Mai until you've climbed the 309 steps to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

The Temple

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was founded in 1383 and is one of northern Thailand's most sacred Buddhist sites. The centrepiece is a golden chedi (stupa) that's said to contain a relic of the Buddha.

What to expect: - 309 steps up the Naga (serpent) staircase — or take the funicular (50 THB) - The golden chedi surrounded by a viewing terrace with panoramic city views - Active worship — monks chanting, devotees praying, and incense filling the air - Incredible views over Chiang Mai, especially at sunset - Entry: 50 THB for foreigners

Tips: - Go early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon (after 4 PM) to avoid tour bus crowds - Dress respectfully — knees and shoulders covered (wraps available at the entrance) - Sunset from the temple terrace is magical but the last red songthaew down leaves at 6 PM

Where to Stay

On the Mountain

Doi Suthep has very limited accommodation, but a few options exist on the mountain road:

Hmong Hilltribe Lodge — Simple rooms in a Hmong village near the temple. Authentic experience, stunning mountain air. 500-1,000 THB/night.

Pongyang Jungle Coaster & Zipline Resort — Not luxurious but the mountain setting is spectacular. 1,000-2,000 THB/night.

In Chiang Mai (Best for Most Visitors)

Most visitors stay in the city and day-trip to Doi Suthep (30 minutes by songthaew).

Old City — Walking distance to temples, night markets, restaurants. Closest to the Doi Suthep songthaew departure point at Chiang Mai Zoo. - Tamarind Village (2,500-5,000 THB) - Sri Pat Guesthouse (400-800 THB)

Nimman — Modern neighbourhood near Chiang Mai University, closer to the mountain road. - Art Mai Gallery Hotel (1,500-3,000 THB) - 9 Waan Hostel (300-500 THB)

Nimmanhaemin Road Hotels

Nimman is the closest city neighbourhood to Doi Suthep — you can see the temple's golden chedi from rooftop bars in the area. A songthaew from Nimman to Doi Suthep takes 20-25 minutes.

FAQ

How long does it take to visit Doi Suthep?

Allow 2-3 hours total: 30 minutes to get there, 30-45 minutes at the temple, and 30 minutes back. If you want to explore the national park or Bhubing Palace too, plan a half-day.

Is Doi Suthep worth visiting?

Yes — it's Chiang Mai's most important temple and the views alone justify the visit. The golden chedi is genuinely impressive, and the atmosphere (especially during morning prayers) is moving whether you're Buddhist or not.

Can you walk up to Doi Suthep from the city?

The Monk's Trail is a forest path from Chiang Mai University to the temple — about 2 hours uphill through jungle. It's a rewarding hike but strenuous. Start early to avoid heat. Water, good shoes, and mosquito repellent are essential.
