Bangkok Riverside Hotels 2026 — Chao Phraya River Views Guide
The Chao Phraya River is the soul of Bangkok. It's where the city began, where trade flowed for centuries, and where some of the most dramatic temples and palaces in Southeast Asia still stand. Staying on the river puts you in a completely different Bangkok than the Sukhumvit hotel strip — quieter in some ways, more historically layered, and connected to the city by the free Chao Phraya Express boat service that's one of the most pleasant ways to travel in the entire country.
The River as Your Transport
Before getting into hotel recommendations, understand the river transport network:
Chao Phraya Express Boat: A public ferry service running up and down the river, with piers (tha) every few hundred metres. Fares from 10–40 THB depending on the route. Runs approximately 6am–8pm. An extraordinary way to travel — fast, cheap, and gives you river views that taxi passengers in Bangkok traffic never see.
Free hotel shuttles: Most riverside hotels operate their own shuttle boats between their pier and Sathorn/Central Pier — the main hub connecting to the BTS Skytrain at Saphan Taksin station.
The BTS connection: Saphan Taksin BTS station sits at Sathorn/Central Pier. From here you can reach the entire BTS Skytrain network. Riverside hotels are not isolated — they're one ferry ride from central Bangkok.
The Best Bangkok Riverside Hotels
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok
The most legendary hotel in Bangkok and one of the most famous hotels in the world. The Authors' Wing (built in 1876) has hosted Somerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad, and countless heads of state. The Garden Wing is a masterpiece of Thai art and craftsmanship. The Authors' Lounge for afternoon tea is a Bangkok institution.
Rates from around 15,000–30,000 THB per night depending on room category. It's not for budget travellers. But it's one of the genuine bucket-list hotel experiences in the world.
River access: Private pier, shuttle to Saphan Taksin, direct river views from most river-wing rooms.
Capella Bangkok
A newer entrant that's quickly established itself as one of the city's finest hotels. Stunning design, exceptional service, private riverside villas with plunge pools. The Phra Nakhon room views across the river to the temple district are extraordinary.
Rates from around 20,000–40,000 THB per night. The Côte by Mauro Colagreco restaurant has been recognised internationally.
The Peninsula Bangkok
Across the river from the Mandarin Oriental on the Thonburi side. Arguably the most beautiful pool situation on the Bangkok riverfront — three-tiered pool with river views. Elegant rooms, exceptional service, and a hotel boat that connects you to the main Chao Phraya pier network.
Rates from around 12,000–25,000 THB per night.
Riva Surya Bangkok (Mid-Range)
A boutique hotel on the Khao San Road side of the river (Phra Arthit Pier area). Good pool, river views, and a significantly more accessible price point than the luxury properties. Rates from around 3,000–5,500 THB per night.
The location near the Phra Arthit area means walking distance to the National Museum, Khao San Road, and the historic Rattanakosin district.
Sala Rattanakosin (Mid-Range)
A beautifully positioned boutique hotel directly opposite Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn). The rooftop bar and restaurant have arguably the best temple view in Bangkok. Rates from around 4,000–7,000 THB per night.
The Tha Tien pier (for the Wat Arun ferry) is literally next to the hotel. You can watch the sunrise illuminating Wat Arun's ornate spires from your breakfast table.
Ibis Styles Bangkok Khaosan Khao Wang (Budget)
A budget-to-mid-range option in the Phra Athit/Phra Sumeru road area, with some river-view rooms available. From around 1,800–3,000 THB per night. Good location for the historic district.
Millennium Hilton (Mid-Upper Range)
A large riverside hotel with excellent facilities — pool, multiple restaurants, Three Sixty Lounge rooftop bar (see our rooftop bars guide). Rates from around 4,000–7,500 THB per night. Good combination of facilities, location, and the rooftop bar experience.
Arun Residence (Boutique)
A charming 6-room boutique house directly on the river, opposite the Grand Palace. The house has been in the same family for generations and the rooms maintain a personal, lived-in quality that's completely different from large hotels. Excellent food. Rates from around 2,500–4,000 THB per night.
Best Areas of the Riverside
Silom/Bangrak Area (Upper River, South)
The stretch from Sathorn/Central Pier north to Taksin Bridge. The Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula, and Capella are in this stretch. Close to the BTS Saphan Taksin station. Good for access to the Silom business district and Patpong Night Market.
Rattanakosin/Phra Nakhon (Historical District)
Further north, near the Grand Palace. Sala Rattanakosin and Arun Residence are here. Walk to the major temples. Use the ferry for everything else. This is Bangkok as it was before Sukhumvit existed.
Khao San Road/Phra Arthit Area
The backpacker zone has some excellent boutique and mid-range hotels on the river. Riva Surya is the standout. Good access to the historic district, the National Gallery, and the Phra Arthit Express Pier for the ferry.
Thonburi Side (West Bank)
The Peninsula is on this side. Quieter than the east bank, connected by the hotel boat. The Thonburi side has Wat Arun and the Royal Barges Museum.
River Dining
Most riverside hotels have signature restaurants with river views. But you don't need to stay at a hotel to eat on the river:
The River Wine & Grill: Casual outdoor restaurant right on the river near Asiatique. Thai and international food, consistent river breezes.
Asiatique The Riverfront: A large riverside night market and entertainment complex about 15 minutes south of Central Pier by the free shuttle boat. Restaurants, live music, Ferris wheel. Good for an evening out.
Yok Yor Restaurant: An old-school riverside Thai restaurant that's been in the same location for decades. Very local, excellent crab dishes, on the west bank.
Book Bangkok Riverside Hotels on EezyStay
Riverside Bangkok hotels — particularly the boutique properties like Sala Rattanakosin and Arun Residence — are exactly the type of accommodation that Agoda and Booking.com mark up most aggressively. Small inventory, high demand, and strong international brand recognition = maximum OTA margin.
EezyStay's lower commission model means meaningfully better rates on these properties. On a 4-night Sala Rattanakosin stay at 5,000 THB/night, the saving over Agoda can be 2,000–3,500 THB. That's a long-tail boat tour of the canals and dinner for two.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best luxury hotels on the Bangkok riverside?
The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and Capella Bangkok are consistently ranked among the best riverside hotels in the world. The Peninsula Bangkok on the Thonburi west bank is another top choice. All three offer private piers, river views, and exceptional service — with rates from 12,000 to 40,000+ THB per night.
Is it worth staying on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok?
Yes, particularly if you want access to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun without fighting Bangkok traffic. The Chao Phraya Express Boat runs 6am to 8pm and connects riverside hotels to the BTS Skytrain at Saphan Taksin for just 10–40 THB. The atmosphere is also completely different from Sukhumvit — quieter, more historic, and genuinely Bangkok.
Which Bangkok riverside hotel has the best Wat Arun views?
Sala Rattanakosin and Arun Residence are positioned directly opposite Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and offer the best temple views from rooms and rooftop areas. Both are boutique properties at more accessible price points than the grand riverside hotels. Book on EezyStay for meaningfully better rates than Agoda or Booking.com on these smaller properties.
How do riverside hotels connect to central Bangkok?
Most riverside hotels operate free shuttle boats to Sathorn/Central Pier, which connects to the BTS Skytrain at Saphan Taksin station. From there you can reach Sukhumvit, Siam, and Silom within 10–20 minutes. The Chao Phraya Express Boat also serves dozens of piers along the river at very low cost.
Are Bangkok riverside hotels more expensive than Sukhumvit hotels?
Luxury riverside hotels (Mandarin Oriental, Capella, Peninsula) are among Bangkok's most expensive. Mid-range and boutique riverside options (Sala Rattanakosin, Riva Surya, Arun Residence) are often comparable in price to similar Sukhumvit hotels. EezyStay's lower commission model makes boutique riverside properties particularly good value compared to what the major OTAs charge.
