The Case For Staying Near Khao San

The Banglamphu neighbourhood around Khao San is actually one of Bangkok's most interesting areas. Forget the road itself for a moment — within walking distance you have:

• The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew — 15-minute walk
• Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha) — 20-minute walk
• Wat Arun — ferry across the river from nearby Tha Tien pier
• Democracy Monument and Ratchadamnoen Avenue — 5-minute walk

The location is genuinely excellent for temple-hopping and Old Bangkok exploration. And the surrounding streets (Soi Rambuttri, Phra Athit Road) have great restaurants and bars without the tourist circus.

The Case Against

Khao San Road itself is loud, touristy, and full of the same Chang vest / scorpion-on-a-stick / braided-hair tourist traps it's had for 20 years. If you want to sleep before midnight, don't book a room with windows facing the road.

There's no BTS or MRT station nearby — you're dependent on taxis, tuk-tuks, and the Chao Phraya river boats for getting around. This matters less if you're focused on Old Bangkok, more if you want to explore Sukhumvit or Silom.
